Global environmental protection practices became the subject of discussion at the Interdisciplinary Studies "European Green Dimensions"
On April 23, 2025, within the framework of the Interdisciplinary Studies "European Green Dimensions," implemented with the support of the EU Erasmus + Jean Monnet Program, Professor Olena Mitryasova of the Department of Ecology gave a meaningful presentation on the topic of "Global practices in air, water, soil, and waste management protection."
During the lecture, the key environmental challenges facing humanity in preserving the environment's main components were examined in detail. Professor Mitryasova highlighted:
The main environmental problems of atmospheric air and the phenomenon of the "greenhouse effect" as a cause of climate change, as well as effective methods of fixing greenhouse gases.
The impact of agriculture on greenhouse gas emissions and ways to reduce them.
Key environmental problems of water resources, sources of pollution of the World Ocean, and inland waters.
Innovative global methods of wastewater treatment, water treatment,t and rational use of water resources.
The state of the Earth's soil resources, the main environmental problems of soils, and promising practices for their protection.
Current global approaches to waste recycling and disposal.
Given the breadth of the topics covered, the speaker focused on key aspects of air, water and soil protection, as well as global experience in waste management. The examples of recycling efficiency aroused particular interest among the audience. Thus, it was noted that recycling one plastic bottle saves the amount of energy sufficient for four hours of operation of a 100-watt light bulb, and the recycling process itself pollutes the air by 20% less and water by 50% less than the production of a new bottle from primary raw materials. In addition, the recycling industry already employs over 1.6 million people worldwide, and its projected contribution to global GDP over the next ten years is $400 billion.
All of the issues discussed sparked active discussion and lively debate among the participants of the Interdisciplinary Studies.
